The Town of Bargoed, nestled in the heart of the Caerphilly County Borough of Wales, is steeped in a rich industrial history that is not commonly known. Bargoed rose to prominence during the 19th century due to its coal mining operations, becoming one of the dominant coal mining towns in the South Wales Valleys. The Bargoed Colliery, which was one of the largest and most productive in the area, was operational from 1897 to 1977. During its peak years, it employed thousands of local residents, shaping the town's cultural identity and contributing significantly to the industrial heritage of Wales. Even now, remnants of its mining past can be found in the town's architecture and layout.
Another intriguing aspect of Bargoed's history revolves around a remarkable feat of engineering the Rhymney Railway Viaduct. This iconic landmark, constructed during the 1850s, was a vital transport link for the coal industry, enabling the efficient transport of coal from the local mines to ports along the South Wales coast. The viaduct, with its impressive arches traversing the Rhymney River, stands as a testament to the town's industrial past. Moreover, the viaduct also played an unexpected role during World War II. In an attempt to deceive German bombers, the local authorities created a false town, complete with lights and a fake railway line, near the viaduct. This clever ruse successfully diverted enemy bombers away from the real town, saving Bargoed from significant damage.
