The charming town of Bedale, nestled in the heart of North Yorkshire, England, boasts a rich and intriguing history, particularly with regards to its railway heritage. Notably, Bedale was an important station on the North Eastern Railway's line between Northallerton and Hawes. Opened in 1855, it was a bustling hub of activity and commerce, serving as a key connection point for the local farming community. Even more fascinating is that after over a century of service, the line was closed in 1954 due to a decline in demand. However, the Wensleydale Railway Association re-opened the station in 2004, giving it a new lease of life and offering heritage services to locals and tourists alike. This remarkable story of revival underscores Bedale's resilience and commitment to preserving its historical heritage.
On a distinctly different note, Bedale is home to an unusual and captivating tradition that has been part of the town's culture for hundreds of years. Every Easter Tuesday, the Bedale Hunt takes place, a unique event that involves a pack of foxhounds being led through the town by a huntsman, with a group of followers in traditional hunting attire. The spectacle draws crowds from far and wide, creating a lively atmosphere. However, the true peculiarity of this event lies in its origins. It is said that in the 18th-century, a local landowner bequeathed a piece of land to the parish on the condition that this custom be observed annually. Thus, the Bedale Hunt stands as a testament to the town's commitment to maintaining its unique traditions, offering a glimpse into a bygone era.
Bedale ( BEE-dayl), is a market town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, it is 34 miles (55 km) north of Leeds, 26 miles (42 km) south-west of Middlesbrough and 7 miles (11 km) south-west of the county town of Northallerton. It was originally in Richmondshire and listed in Domesday Book as part of Catterick wapentake, which was also known as Hangshire (named after Hang Bank in Finghall); it was split again and Bedale remained in East Hang. Bedale Beck is a tributary of the River Swale, which forms one of the Yorkshire Dales, with its predominance of agriculture and its related small traditional trades, although tourism is increasingly important.
