Bedworth, a market town located within the county of Warwickshire, England, has a rich history that is closely tied to the hat-making industry. This lesser-known fact about Bedworth reveals much about its industrial past. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Bedworth was recognised as a prominent centre for the production of hats, particularly silk top hats. The town was home to several hatteries, with workers using the plentiful supply of local rabbits to make felt for the hats. This industry flourished until the turn of the 20th century, significantly shaping the economic and cultural landscape of Bedworth.
In addition to its intriguing industrial history, Bedworth is also known for hosting the unique Armistice Day Parade, the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom outside of London. This event is a significant part of Bedworth's community spirit and identity. The tradition began in 1921 when local resident, Eliot Bullock, decided that the end of the First World War should be commemorated annually, irrespective of which day of the week it fell on. This made Bedworth the only town in Britain to continuously observe a two-minute silence on Armistice Day at the 11th hour, regardless of whether it is a working day or not. This has been upheld for almost a century, demonstrating a profound respect for history and a strong sense of community.
Bedworth ( or locally ) is a market town in the borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth, Warwickshire, England. It is situated between Coventry, 6 miles (9.5 km) to the south, and Nuneaton, 3 miles (5 km) to the north. In the 2021 census the town had a population of 31,090.
