The town of Brynmawr, situated in the Blaenau Gwent area of Wales, has a rich industrial history. It is known as the highest town in Wales, residing at an altitude of over 1200 feet above sea level. This unique geographic position led to the establishment of a thriving iron and coal industry during the 19th Century. The town was home to the Clydach Iron Works, which produced high-quality iron that was exported worldwide. Despite the closure of the ironworks in the 1880s, the legacy of Brynmawr's industrial past is still visible today in the form of its many historic buildings and structures.
Another fascinating aspect of Brynmawr is its role in the development of the modernist architectural movement. In the 1940s, the town was selected as the site for a groundbreaking social housing experiment, led by the architectural team of Peter and Alison Smithson. The Smithsons designed a series of innovative and functional homes, known as the Brynmawr Rubber Factory, which were influenced by the principles of modernist architecture. This project was a significant milestone in the evolution of British architecture and Brynmawr's contribution to this movement is recognised globally, making the town an important site in the history of modern architecture.
Brynmawr (Welsh for 'big hill'; ; brin-MOUR; Welsh: [brnmaur]) is a market town, community and electoral ward in Blaenau Gwent, Wales. The town, sometimes cited as the highest town in Wales, is situated at 1,250 to 1,500 feet (380 to 460 m) above sea level at the head of the South Wales Valleys. It grew with the development of the coal mining and iron industries in the early 19th century. Until the reorganisation of local authorities in 1974, Brynmawr was administered as part of the county of Brecknockshire.
