The town of Buxton, nestled in the heart of Derbyshire, England, boasts a rare gem in the form of its unique thermal springs. Unlike most English towns, Buxton was built upon a thermal spring, with water temperatures that remain a constant 28 degrees Celsius - a phenomenon that first attracted the Romans who named it 'Aquae Arnemetiae'. The spring's water, rich in minerals, has been renowned for its healing properties since Roman times. Today, visitors can enjoy this geothermal wonder at 'St Anns Well', where the water is free to drink, or at the Buxton Thermal Baths, offering a unique spa experience.
Another intriguing aspect of Buxton's history is its connection to the literary world. The Buxton Festival, which began in 1979, has grown into one of the UK's largest opera festivals, attracting visitors from around the globe. But the town's literary significance predates this festival. Mary Shelley, famous for her novel 'Frankenstein', stayed in Buxton in 1814, and her experiences in the town are said to have influenced aspects of her groundbreaking work. In fact, the 'Old Hall Hotel' where she lodged, is one of the oldest in England, dating back to 1573, and continues to operate today, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in a piece of literary history.
Buxton is a spa town in the Borough of High Peak, Derbyshire, in the East Midlands region of England. It is England's highest market town, sited at some 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level. It lies close to Cheshire to the west and Staffordshire to the south, on the edge of the Peak District National Park. In 1974, the municipal borough merged with other nearby boroughs, including Glossop, to form the local government district and borough of High Peak. The town population was 22,115 at the 2011 Census. Sights include Poole's Cavern, a limestone cavern; St Ann's Well, fed by a geothermal spring bottled by Buxton Mineral Water Company; and many historic buildings, including John Carr's restored Buxton Crescent, Henry Currey's Buxton Baths and Frank Matcham's Buxton Opera House. The Devonshire Campus of the University of Derby occupies historic premises. Buxton is twinned with Oignies in France and Bad Nauheim in Germany.
