Charlbury, a charming town nestled in the heart of Oxfordshire, boasts an intriguing history that includes a once-thriving glove-making industry. In the 19th century, Charlbury was the hub of glove manufacturing in England, producing high-quality leather gloves that were exported around the world. The town was home to several glove factories, the largest of which was run by the Hitchman family. The Hitchman's glove factory was so prolific that it was said to employ one in six of the town's residents. Although the glove-making industry has since disappeared, it has left an indelible mark on the town's history and culture.
Another lesser-known fact about Charlbury is its connection to the world-renowned Oxford University. It is home to Ditchley Park, a grand mansion that served as the occasional residence of Sir Francis Knollys, who was Vice-Chamberlain to Queen Elizabeth I and an alumnus of Oxford University. The mansion later played a crucial role during the Second World War as a secure meeting place for Winston Churchill and his war cabinet. Today, Ditchley Park serves as the venue for the Ditchley Foundation, hosting international conferences and events, which continues to strengthen Charlbury's ties with academia and global affairs.
