Downham Market, a charming market town in Norfolk, England, is steeped in history that dates back to the Saxon period. One less-known fact about this town is its connection to the American War of Independence. The town's former vicar, Reverend James Yorke, whose tenure was from 1770 to 1808, was a staunch loyalist who stirred controversy and faced criticism from his parishioners for his vocal support of King George III during the American War of Independence. His fervour for the monarchy and his outspoken nature made him a significant figure in the town's history.
Another captivating aspect of Downham Market is its unique 'black and white' clock, a local icon situated in the town centre. Unveiled in 1878, this clock was built on the site of the town's ancient market cross. What is intriguing about the clock is that it was constructed using money left by the town's former postmaster, William Page, who had instructed in his will that a clock should be constructed after his death. Today, the clock stands as a symbol of the towns rich heritage and serves as a focal point for community gatherings.
Downham Market, sometimes simply referred to as Downham, is a market town and civil parish in Norfolk, England. During the Middle Ages, it was famed for its butter market and also hosted a notable horse fair. The market is now held Fridays and Saturdays. Notable buildings in the town include its medieval parish church, dedicated to St Edmund, and the Victorian clock tower, constructed in 1878. The town is also known as the place where Charles I hid after the Battle of Naseby. In 2004 the town completed a regeneration project on the Market Place, moving the market to the town hall car park. The decorative town sign depicts the crown and arrows of St Edmund with horses to show the importance of the horse fairs in the town's history. A heritage centre, Discover Downham, opened in a former fire station in 2016. The town is twinned with Civray, Vienne, France.
