East Linton, a charming town nestled in East Lothian, Scotland, has a rich history dating back to its inception. One remarkable fact about East Linton is its connection to the renowned Scottish artist, Sir Robert Noble. Born here in 1857, Noble was a landscape painter who received great acclaim for his realistic portrayals of the Scottish countryside. The artist's deep affection for his birthplace is evident in his work, with numerous paintings featuring the rolling hills and quaint architecture of East Linton. The town, in turn, honours its famous son with a plaque at his former residence on High Street, making it a point of interest for art lovers and historians alike.
East Linton also houses an impressive and rather unique feature - the Preston Mill. This historic mill, which is believed to have been in operation since the 16th century, is the oldest mechanically intact watermill in Scotland. Its unusual conical-roofed kiln and waterwheel have become iconic symbols of the town, attracting fans of architecture and history from around the world. The mill ceased operations in 1959, but it has been meticulously preserved by the National Trust for Scotland and now serves as a fascinating museum, providing a window into the town's agricultural past and the evolution of milling technology over the centuries.
East Linton is a village and former police burgh in East Lothian, Scotland, situated on the River Tyne and A199 road (former A1 road) five miles east of Haddington, with an estimated population of 1,790 in 2020. The number dropped significantly at the end of the 20th century, but has subsequently risen again.
