The town of Erith, located in Greater London, England, has a rich and diverse history, with roots dating back to the Roman period. One particularly fascinating fact is its connection to the Victorian era's industrial revolution. During the 19th century, Erith emerged as an important industrial town, with large-scale ammunition factories set up during the period. The Crossness Pumping Station, a historic sewage pumping station designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and opened in 1865, is a striking testament to this period. Not only did it play a crucial role in resolving London's sanitation issues, but its elaborate Byzantine style architecture, featuring ornate wrought ironwork, earned it the nickname 'The Cathedral on the Marsh'.
Erith's geographical position along the River Thames has greatly influenced its cultural and economic development. A lesser-known fact about Erith is its once thriving role in the maritime industry. From the 15th to the 17th century, Erith served as a key port for London, with trading ships regularly docking to unload goods such as grain and timber. This maritime heritage is still visible today in the town's riverside pubs and the Erith Rowing Club, which is one of the oldest rowing clubs on the Thames. The Erith Yacht Club, established in 1900, is the largest sailing club on the tidal Thames and has even had the honour of being granted the privilege of using the prefix 'Royal' in its name by King George VI in 1947, a testament to its significance in the region's maritime history.
Erith ( ) is an area in south-east London, England, 13.3 miles (21.4 km) east of Charing Cross. Before the creation of Greater London in 1965, it was in the historical county of Kent. Since 1965 it has formed part of the London Borough of Bexley. It lies north-east of Bexleyheath and north-west of Dartford, on the south bank of the River Thames. The town centre has been modernised with further dwellings added since 1961. The curved riverside high street has three listed buildings, including the Church of England church and the Carnegie Building. Erith otherwise consists mainly of suburban housing. It is linked to central London and Kent by rail and to Thamesmead by a dual carriageway. It has the longest pier in London, and retains a coastal environment with salt marshes alongside industrial land.
