The Town of Faringdon in Oxfordshire, England, holds a peculiar and colourful tradition that is both intriguing and unique. The Lordship of Faringdon is an honour bestowed upon an individual, not by birthright or through political manoeuvres, but by the townsfolk themselves every three years. The selected Lord or Lady of Faringdon is expected to perform eccentric acts, a tradition that began with the first Lord, Gerald Tyrwhitt-Wilson, who was known for his extravagant parties and for dyeing his pigeons vibrant hues. The tradition continues to this day, with the current Lord or Lady adding their unique touch to the role, contributing to the town's vibrant and eccentric culture.
Another captivating element about Faringdon lies in its geographical feature known as Folly Hill or Faringdon Folly. This is a man-made, 100-foot high tower, surrounded by a woodland known as Folly Wood. The Folly was built in 1935 by Lord Berners, the then Lord of Faringdon, who was known for his eccentricity. The Folly is the last tower to be built in England, and it offers panoramic views of five counties on clear days. Interestingly, the woodland is populated with a variety of sculptures, including dinosaurs and fairies, adding an element of whimsy and contributing to the town's reputation for the peculiar and unconventional.
Faringdon is a historic market town in the Vale of White Horse, Oxfordshire, England, 18 miles (29 km) south-west of Oxford, 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Wantage and 12 miles (19 km) east-north-east of Swindon. It extends to the River Thames in the north; the highest ground is on the Ridgeway in the south. Faringdon was Berkshire's westernmost town until the 1974 boundary changes transferred its administration to Oxfordshire. The civil parish is formally known as Great Faringdon, to distinguish it from Little Faringdon in West Oxfordshire. The 2011 Census gave a population of 7,121; it was estimated at 7,992 in 2019. On 1 February 2004, Faringdon became the first place in south-east England to be awarded Fairtrade Town status.
