The Town of Gosport, nestled in the heart of Hampshire, England, boasts a rich maritime history that is perhaps lesser known to many. The town is home to the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, a captivating location where the HMS Alliance, Britain's only surviving Second World War era ocean-going submarine, is preserved. This is not just a museum piece, but a monument to the town's longstanding nautical heritage, as Gosport has been a significant naval port for centuries. During the Age of Sail, Gosport was a major departure point for soldiers and sailors heading towards military campaigns around the world, underlining its strategic importance.
Another intriguing facet of Gosport's history is its contribution to aviation. The town was instrumental in the development of naval aviation, with the first ever airship to fly in Britain taking off from Gosport in 1905. This was the baby of local engineer and inventor Ernest Thompson Willows, who designed and flew the airship himself. The town also played host to the Royal Naval Air Service's training establishment during the First World War. Today, Gosport's proud aviation history can be explored at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, which showcases the development of aircraft that operated from ships. This lesser-known aspect of the town's past underlines Gosport's rich and diverse contribution to the development of British military technology and tactics.
Gosport ( GOS-port) is a town and non-metropolitan borough, on the south coast of Hampshire, South East England. At the 2021 Census, its population was 81,952. Gosport is situated on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour, opposite the city of Portsmouth, to which it is linked by the Gosport Ferry. Gosport lies south-east of Fareham, to which it is linked by a Bus Rapid Transit route and the A32. Until the last quarter of the 20th century, Gosport was a major naval town associated with the defence and supply infrastructure of His Majesty's Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth. As such over the years extensive fortifications were created. Gosport is still home to HMS Sultan and a Naval Armament Supply Facility, as well as a Helicopter Repair base. The Town area of the Borough, including Newtown, consists of the town centre, Stoke Road shopping area, Walpole Park, Royal Clarence Yard and three modern marinas: Royal Clarence, Gosport Marina and Haslar Marina. As part of the Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Millennium project, a large sundial, known as the Millennium Timespace, was installed on the harbour front in 2000.
