It was here, in 1646, that the decisive Battle of Torrington took place, marking the end of Royalist resistance in the West Country. This event was of significant historical importance, as it marked a turning point in the war that resulted in the eventual execution of King Charles I. Today, the town houses 1646, an interactive visitor centre, where people are invited to learn more about this pivotal event in British history, while the battlefield itself, still lying mostly undisturbed, is a testament to the town's rich past.
Another intriguing aspect of Great Torrington is its unique and longstanding connection with the arts. The town is home to the Plough Arts Centre, an arts venue that offers a diverse mix of film, theatre, music, and exhibitions, serving as a cultural hub not only for the locals but also for visitors from afar.
