Great Torrington, a small market town nestled in the beautiful North Devon countryside, played an important role in the English Civil War. It was here, in 1646, that the decisive Battle of Torrington took place, marking the end of Royalist resistance in the West Country. This event was of significant historical importance, as it marked a turning point in the war that resulted in the eventual execution of King Charles I. Today, the town houses 1646, an interactive visitor centre, where people are invited to learn more about this pivotal event in British history, while the battlefield itself, still lying mostly undisturbed, is a testament to the town's rich past.
Another intriguing aspect of Great Torrington is its unique and longstanding connection with the arts. The town is home to the Plough Arts Centre, an arts venue that offers a diverse mix of film, theatre, music, and exhibitions, serving as a cultural hub not only for the locals but also for visitors from afar. But perhaps the most charming feature of Great Torrington's arts scene is the tradition of 'Well Dressing', a custom brought to the town from Derbyshire in the 1980s. Every May, locals decorate the town's water sources and wells with floral displays, honouring the importance of water to life. This tradition, combined with the town's vibrant arts scene, gives Great Torrington its unique cultural identity.
Great Torrington (often abbreviated to Torrington, though the villages of Little Torrington and Black Torrington are situated in the same region) is a market town in Devon, England. Parts of it are sited on high ground with steep drops down to the River Torridge below, with the lower-lying parts of the town prone to occasional flooding. Torrington is in the centre of Tarka Country, a landscape captured by Henry Williamson in his novel Tarka the Otter in 1927. Great Torrington has one of the most active volunteering communities in the United Kingdom. In July 2019, Great Torrington was reported to be the healthiest place to live in Britain. Researchers from the University of Liverpool found that the area had low levels of pollution, good access to green space and health services, along with few retail outlets.
