The Town of Howden, nestled in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, harbours a captivating history that includes a church with royal connections. The Howden Minster, despite its partial ruins, stands as a testament to the town's historical significance. Commissioned in the early 13th century by Bishop Walter de Grey of York, this church was once a grand edifice, boasting a chapter of canons and visited by kings. In fact, King Edward II himself stayed in the attached palace in the early 14th century while attending the dedication of the neighbouring St. John's Hospital. The Minster's spire, which was once a prominent feature of the Yorkshire skyline, unfortunately collapsed in 1696, but the remnants still offer a glimpse into the town's illustrious past.
Geographically, Howden enjoys a unique position as it is situated on the very edge of the Vale of York, close to the River Derwent. This location grants it a distinctive landscape and has shaped its cultural and economic growth over the centuries. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Howden developed a reputation as a hub for horse trading, drawing dealers from across the United Kingdom. The horse fair, known as 'Howden Fair', was held annually on the last Thursday in March and was considered one of the largest horse markets in England. The fair ceased in the early 20th century, but its legacy remains part of Howden's rich historical tapestry.
Howden () is a market town and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It lies in the Vale of York to the north of the M62, on the A614 road about 16 miles (26 km) south-east of York and 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Goole, which lies across the River Ouse. It is known for Howden Minster, one of the largest churches in the East Riding. William the Conqueror gave the town to the Bishops of Durham in 1080. The wapentake of Howdenshire was named after the town, and remained an exclave of County Durham until as late as 1846. The original boundaries of the wapentake were used for the current two government wards of Howden and Howdenshire, which had a combined population of 19,753 at the 2011 census.
