The charming town of Hunstanton, Norfolk, is renowned for its unique east-facing coastal location in a region mostly composed of west-facing shores. This distinctive geographical aspect allows Hunstanton to witness magnificent sunsets over the sea, a rare spectacle for an East Coast town. However, the town also boasts a geological wonder known as the Hunstanton Cliffs. These cliffs display a striking striped pattern due to the layers of sedimentary rock, each layer representing a different geological period. The white chalk at the top is the youngest, while the red chalk in the middle dates back to the Albian stage of the Cretaceous period, and the brown Carstone at the bottom is the oldest.
Hunstanton possesses a rich historical heritage, the most remarkable of which is associated with the tale of Saint Edmund, the original patron saint of England. Legend has it that Saint Edmund landed at Hunstanton in AD 855, where he was crowned King of East Anglia. The Hunstanton Hall estate, which has its roots embedded in the 14th century, is said to have a 'haunted' garden maze. This maze is associated with a local legend of a ghostly figure of a man, believed to be the spirit of a former resident, Sir Hamon Le Strange, who is said to haunt the grounds.
