Laugharne, nestled in the scenic county of Carmarthenshire, Wales, is most famously known as the final home of the celebrated poet and writer Dylan Thomas. However, few are aware that Laugharne boasts a fascinating medieval history. The iconic Laugharne Castle, a picturesque ruin on the banks of the Tf estuary, has a history that dates back to the 12th century. Originally built by the Normans, the castle has witnessed many turbulent events, including the turbulent 13th-century Welsh Rebellion led by Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffydd. In the 16th century, it was transformed into a magnificent Tudor mansion by Sir John Perrot, reputed to be an illegitimate son of King Henry VIII.
Another lesser-known fact about Laugharne relates to its unique form of local governance. Laugharne is one of just two places in the United Kingdom that still maintains the medieval system of electing a Portreeve, the other being Llantrisant in Rhondda Cynon Taf. The Portreeve, selected annually, is the ceremonial head of the Laugharne Corporation, a charitable institution dating back to a charter granted by Elizabeth I in 1575. The Corporation's meetings are held at the historic Guildhall, and are opened with a traditional horn-blowing ceremony. This distinctive custom showcases the town's deep commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage.
Laugharne (Welsh: Talacharn) is a town on the south coast of Carmarthenshire, Wales, lying on the estuary of the River Tf. The ancient borough of Laugharne Township (Welsh: Treflan Lacharn) with its Corporation and Charter is a unique survival in Wales. In a predominantly English-speaking area, just on the Landsker Line, the community is bordered by those of Llanddowror, St Clears, Llangynog and Llansteffan. It had a population at the 2021 census of 1,100.Laugharne Township electoral ward also includes the communities of Eglwyscummin, Pendine and Llanddowror.Dylan Thomas, who lived in Laugharne from 1949 until his death in 1953, famously described it as a "timeless, mild, beguiling island of a town". It is generally accepted as the inspiration for the fictional town of Llareggub in Under Milk Wood. Thomas confirmed on two occasions that his play was based on Laugharne although topographically it is also similar to New Quay where he briefly lived.
