The town of Llanybydder, nestled in the heart of Carmarthenshire, Wales, is renowned for its unique agricultural heritage. It is home to the largest horse fair in Wales, a tradition that has been maintained since the 19th century. This annual event, known as 'Barley Saturday', is celebrated on the last Saturday of April, attracting horse enthusiasts from across the United Kingdom and beyond. It is not only a horse market, but also a festival, featuring a parade showcasing the stunning Welsh Cobs, a breed of horse native to Wales. The horses are judged, traded, and displayed, and the event is a vibrant celebration of the town's equestrian legacy.
Another intriguing aspect of Llanybydder is its significance in the world of medicine. It is the birthplace of Dr. William Price (1800-1893), a notable figure in Welsh history who was a physician, chartist, and druid. Not only did he advocate for Welsh independence, but he also significantly contributed to the history of cremation in the United Kingdom. After performing a cremation on his deceased son in 1884, which was illegal at that time, he was taken to court. However, the case resulted in a change of the law, making cremation legal in the United Kingdom. Today, Dr. William Price is remembered as a radical who greatly influenced the British way of death.
