One of the fascinating aspects of Luton, Bedfordshire, is that it is considered the birthplace of the hat-making industry in England. The town's history of hat-making can be traced back to the 17th century, making it a significant hub for hat production for more than 300 years. This industry flourished in the 18th century, leading to the establishment of numerous factories. Even today, the town commemorates this heritage through the annual Luton International Carnival and the Hat Factory, a contemporary performing arts venue that was once a real hat factory.
Another interesting fact about Luton is its significant role in the motor vehicle industry. It was here in Luton where Vauxhall Motors, a renowned British car manufacturer, established its headquarters in the early 20th century. The company produced its first car in 1903 and, during the Second World War, turned its production to making tanks. The Vauxhall factory is still operational today, albeit producing commercial vehicles, making it one of the town's major employers. This rich automotive history is celebrated in the Stockwood Discovery Centre, where a collection of vintage vehicles, including some Vauxhall models, are on display.
