The St Thomas Church, a Grade II listed building with its origins dating back to the 13th century, is a testament to the town's architectural heritage. The town of Lymington, situated in the gorgeous county of Hampshire, England, holds an intriguing story about transforming industries. During the 18th century, Lymington was one of the foremost producers of sea salt in the country. This was due to the town's innovative salt production method, which involved letting sea water into large pans and allowing it to evaporate in the sun. The leftover salt was then collected and sold. However, when this industry declined, Lymington cleverly converted its salt pans into fish ponds, thus creating a thriving fishing industry, which continues to be a significant part of the town's economy to this day.
Secondly, Lymington has a unique boating history. Every year since the mid-1800s, it has hosted the Lymington Regatta, a prestigious sailing event attracting participants from far and wide. However, the town's maritime connection predates this event. Lymington was a major shipbuilding centre during the Middle Ages and was noted for the construction of warships for the Royal Navy. Notably, it was at Lymington that the 'Alarm', an innovative 32-gun frigate with a copper-sheathed hull to reduce marine biofouling, was built in 1758. This remarkable ship set a precedent in naval architecture, making Lymington an important location in maritime history.
Lymington is a port town on the west bank of the Lymington River on the Solent, in the New Forest district of Hampshire, England. The town has a large tourist industry, based on proximity to the New Forest and its harbour. It is a major yachting centre with three marinas. As of 2015, the parish of Lymington and Pennington had a population of 15,726.
