Historically, Mitcham is renowned for its association with lavender, forming an interesting part of its cultural heritage. From the 18th to early 20th centuries, Mitcham was recognised as the center of lavender oil production in the world, hosting a multitude of lavender fields and distilleries. The area was so enveloped by the aromatic bloom that it became famously known as the 'Mitcham Lavender.' The unique Mitcham lavender variety, 'Lavandula X Intermedia Mitchamensis,' was actually named after this town. Lavender production has experienced a resurgence today, with a local farm called 'Mitcham Lavender' continuing the tradition.
In terms of geography, Mitcham holds a special place due to its open green spaces. One such place is Mitcham Common, a significant area of natural conservation, spanning over 182 hectares. Comprising woodland, scrubland, and several ponds, the Common is a haven for diverse wildlife. A lesser-known fact about Mitcham Common is its historic usage during World War II. The Common was used as a site for anti-aircraft guns and barrage balloons to defend London from enemy aircraft. These remnants of war history juxtaposed against the serene backdrop of nature make Mitcham Common a fascinating place to visit.
Mitcham is an area within the London Borough of Merton in Southwest London, England. It is centred 7.2 miles (11.6 km) southwest of Charing Cross.
