The town of Newmilns, located in Loudoun, Scotland, boasts a rich and unique history in lace production. This tradition dates back to the late 16th century when Flemish refugees fleeing religious persecution brought their lace-making skills to the area. The industry thrived, and by the 19th century, Newmilns was internationally recognised as a hub for hand-made lace, exporting exquisite pieces across the globe. Even today, the legacy of this lace-making tradition is preserved in the town through the Newmilns Lace and Textiles Association, which aims to educate and inspire future generations about this fascinating aspect of local history.
Another captivating fact about Newmilns is its connection to the Covenanters, a group of Scottish Presbyterian movement that played a significant role in Scotland's religious history during the 17th century. The town and its surrounding areas were a hotbed for Covenanter activity, and many locals were actively involved in the movement. There are several historical landmarks in and around Newmilns that commemorate these events, including the Loudoun Hill Monument, which marks the site of two important Covenanter victories. The rich history of this movement is deeply woven into the fabric of Newmilns, offering a glimpse into a pivotal period in Scotland's past.
Newmilns is a village in the burgh of Newmilns and Greenholm, in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It has a population of 3,057 people (2001 census) and lies on the A71, around seven miles east of Kilmarnock and twenty-five miles southwest of Glasgow. It is situated in a valley through which the River Irvine runs and, with the neighbouring towns of Darvel and Galston, forms an area known as the Upper Irvine Valley (locally referred to as The Valley). As the name suggests, the burgh exists in two parts Newmilns to the north of the river and Greenholm to the south. The river also divides the parishes of Loudoun and Galston, which is why the burgh, although generally referred to as Newmilns, has retained both names.
