Newquay, located in Cornwall, England, is renowned for its exceptional coastline, and it surprisingly plays host to twelve sandy beaches, a rarity for most towns. Fistral Beach, the most famous among them, is globally recognised as the hub of the UK's surfing scene. However, Newquay's coastal appeal extends beyond its sandy shores and into its diverse marine life. The town is home to Cornwall's largest aquarium, the Blue Reef Aquarium, which provides visitors the opportunity to explore local and tropical habitats, housing over 40 themed habitats from Cornish waters to exotic seas. The aquarium features a giant ocean display where you can see black tip reef sharks and large loggerhead sea turtles, serving as a testament to Newquay's rich marine biodiversity.
The town's history is equally as fascinating. Newquay was once a small fishing village known as "Towan Blystra" until the late 19th century when the introduction of passenger trains made the town more accessible and transformed it into a popular holiday destination. Lesser known is the fact that Newquay was a significant player in the pilchard fishing industry in the 14th and 15th centuries, and remnants of this past are still visible in the form of the Huer's Hut, a white-washed, stone building perched high on the cliffs overlooking Newquay Bay. This historic building was used by a 'huer', a lookout who would spot shoals of pilchards and alert the townsfolk, triggering a flurry of activity to harvest these fish. This little-known piece of history highlights the role of Newquay in Cornwall's fishing industry and its evolution into the vibrant town it is today.
Newquay ( NEW-kee; Standard Written Form: Tewynblustri) is a town on the north coast in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The western edge of the town meets the Atlantic at Fistral Bay.
