The Town of Stockport, located in Greater Manchester, England, boasts a rich history steeped in the textile industry. However, a lesser-known aspect of this history is its significant role in the global hat-making industry. From the late 16th to the mid-20th century, Stockport was renowned worldwide for its hat production, housing numerous hat factories or 'hat works'. At the peak of this industry in the 19th century, it is estimated that over six million hats were produced in Stockport annually. Today, this heritage is preserved at the Hat Works Museum, the UK's only museum dedicated entirely to the hatting industry, hats and headwear. The museum, situated in the beautifully restored Victorian-era Wellington Mill, offers an intriguing insight into Stockport's hatting history, showcasing over 400 hats and numerous pieces of machinery.
Stockport also possesses a fascinating geographical feature that is often overlooked. The town is home to the United Kingdom's largest brick structure - the Stockport Viaduct. Completed in 1840 and designed by engineer George Watson Buck, the Viaduct consists of approximately eleven million bricks and stretches over 500 metres, standing as an impressive testament to Victorian engineering. This massive structure, carrying the West Coast Main Line across the valley of the River Mersey, was a key component in Stockport's development during the Industrial Revolution. In addition to its practical use, the Viaduct has made its mark culturally, featuring in several works of art, including paintings by L.S. Lowry, and even appearing in music videos and television dramas.
Stockport is an industrial town in Greater Manchester, England, 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Manchester, 9 miles (14 km) south-west of Ashton-under-Lyne and 12 miles (19 km) north of Macclesfield. The River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey here. It is the main settlement of the wider Metropolitan Borough of Stockport. Most of the town is within the boundaries of the historic county of Cheshire, with the area north of the Mersey in the historic county of Lancashire. Stockport in the 16th century was a small town entirely on the south bank of the Mersey, known for the cultivation of hemp and manufacture of rope. In the 18th century, it had one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles. Stockport's predominant industries of the 19th century were the cotton and allied industries. It was also at the centre of the country's hatting industry, which by 1884 was exporting more than six million hats a year; the last hat works in Stockport closed in 1997. The town's football club, Stockport County, is nicknamed The Hatters. Dominating the western approaches to the town is Stockport Viaduct. Built in 1840, its 27 brick arches carry the mainline railways passing through the town over the River Mersey.
