The picturesque harbour town of Stromness, located on the western coast of Orkney, Scotland, is deeply engrained with a rich maritime history. One of the lesser-known aspects of this history is its significant role in the Arctic whaling industry during the 18th and 19th centuries. Stromness served as the last port of call for ships venturing into the icy northern waters, where they hunted the large marine mammals for their blubber and bones. As a result, the town became a bustling hub of maritime activity, with its robust economy reliant on the whaling industry. Even today, the influence of this industry is evident through the many whaling-related artifacts displayed in the Stromness Museum, including a complete narwhal tusk and an array of intricate scrimshaw carvings done by sailors passing their time at sea.
Stromness is also the birthplace of a notable figure in polar exploration Dr John Rae. Born in 1813, Rae was an explorer and surgeon for the Hudsons Bay Company, who is credited with discovering the last navigable link in the Northwest Passage, the Rae Strait. Despite his significant contributions towards mapping the Arctic region, Rae's reputation suffered due to his controversial report of cannibalism among the ill-fated Franklin expedition. However, his legacy lives on in his hometown, where a statue in his honour stands in the Stromness town centre and his childhood home, the Hall of Clestrain, is a recognised site of historical importance. These landmarks serve as a reminder of his pioneering spirit and his integral role in the exploration of the Arctic.
Stromness (locally , Old Norse: Straumnes; Norn: Stromnes) is the second-most populous town in Orkney, Scotland. It is in the southwestern part of Mainland Orkney. It is a burgh with a parish around the outside with the town of Stromness as its capital.
