But what is lesser known is Tunstall's significant contribution to the industrial revolution of 18th century Britain. The town was a flourishing centre for coal mining and pottery manufacturing, particularly earthenware. In fact, the remnants of the old pottery factories, with their distinctive bottle-shaped kilns, stand as historical landmarks today, offering a glimpse into Tunstall's industrial past. Tunstall's rich clay deposits were instrumental in the town's growth as a pottery hub, attracting many artisans and businesses.
Another intriguing aspect of Tunstall's history is the role it played during the Second World War. The town was home to a crucial 'shadow factory', set up by the British government as part of their strategic plan to decentralise production and safeguard the manufacturing industry from enemy bombings. The factory, run by the famous British company Rootes Securities, produced aircraft parts for the war effort. Despite the secrecy surrounding its operation, it was a significant part of Tunstall's contribution to the war effort. It was one of the original six towns that federated to form the city. Tunstall is the most northern, and fourth largest town of the Potteries. It is situated in the very northwest of the city borough, with its north and west boundaries being the city limit. It stands on a ridge of land between Fowlea Brook to the west and Scotia Brook to the east, surrounded by old tile-making and brick-making sites, some of which date back to the Middle Ages.
