The town of Lyndhurst, nestled in the heart of Hampshire, England, is renowned for its significant historical background as the administrative capital of the New Forest, which was once a royal hunting ground for William the Conqueror. One of the most fascinating aspects of this town is the 'Queen's House', a majestic building located in the town centre. Despite its name, it is not, and has never been, the residence of any queen. It is currently the district office for the Forestry Commission but what makes it unique, is its historical significance. Its 'King's Room' is said to have been prepared for a visit by King Charles I in 1629, a visit which never took place because he was executed. Thus, it encapsulates a poignant piece of English history.
Another intriguing element of Lyndhurst is its connection to Arthur Conan Doyle, the celebrated author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Conan Doyle was a regular visitor to Lyndhurst and the surrounding New Forest, drawing inspiration for his novels from the local landscape and culture. Most notably, his novel 'The White Company' was based on the history of the area. Upon his death, his family wished to bury him in Minstead Churchyard, a small woodland chapel near Lyndhurst. However, due to his controversial spiritual beliefs, the Church of England denied this request. It was not until ten years after his death that his family was able to move his remains to Minstead. This connection to one of literature's most notable authors adds a unique cultural richness to the town.
Lyndhurst is a large village and civil parish situated in the New Forest National Park in Hampshire, England, about nine miles (14 km) south-west of Southampton. Known as the "Capital of the New Forest", Lyndhurst houses the New Forest District Council and Court of Verderers. It is also a popular tourist attraction, with many independent shops, art galleries, cafs, museums, pubs and hotels. As of 2001 Lyndhurst had a population of 2,973, increasing to 3,029 at the 2011 Census. The name derives from an Old English name, comprising the words lind (lime tree) and hyrst (wooded hill). The first mention of Lyndhurst was in the Domesday Book of 1086 under the name 'Linhest'. The church of St. Michael and All Angels was built in the 1860s, and contains a fresco by Lord Leighton and stained-glass windows by Charles Kempe, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and others; Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Alice in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, is buried there. Glasshayes House (the former Lyndhurst Park Hotel) is the only surviving example of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's architectural experimentation, and local folklore records Lyndhurst as the site of a Dragon-slaying, and as being haunted by the ghost of Richard Fitzgeorge de Stacpoole, 1st Duc de Stacpoole.
